Department for (re)habilitation of children
The department for habilitation and rehabilitation of children treats children from birth to age of 15 years with different developmental disorders, consequences of injuries or diseases on their locomotor and nervous systems with prevailing motor impairments. Children with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord lesions, recently recovered diseases of central and peripheral nervous systems, state after surgery on skeletal or nervous systems and limb amputation are referred to the clinic directly from the hospital of their primary treatment. Children with congenital disorders such as cerebral palsy or mielomeningocele are admitted to complex and intensive programmes of habilitation, fitting with devices, preparation for entering the educational system, specific treatment of spasticity, pre- and post-operative testing and therapy, during all of which we cooperate with professionals who treat the children in their home environment.
Our therapy programmes aim to maximally use the child's remaining abilities, assist them in daily activities with necessary devices (wheelchairs, orthoses, prostheses, therapeutic bicycles, communication devices) and make all necessary adjustments for their inclusion into kindergarten or school. The child is accompanied by one of his or her parents who participates in the (re)habilitation and learns ways of dealing with the child which are then continued at home. We cooperate with the child's teachers and the child's problems are often introduced to his or her peers to facilitate acceptance. The children are admitted to the department together with their parent or they come to daily hospital or out-patient treatment if they live in Ljubljana or its surroundings. During hospitalization school-aged children can attend hospital school.
